Around the year old mark, we noticed Jake wasn't saying much. We asked his pediatrician about it and was told because he's the first born, a boy, and doesn't have much interaction with other children, his speech is naturally delayed. She had no concerns and gave us some ways to help him talk. Earlier this summer we went back to the doctor because my mom still thought Jake wasn't saying enough. We were told the same thing as last time. The only change was to get him into playgroups and around children his age more.
Due to mine and Dans work schedule, and only having 1 car, we did not get him around other kids as much as we were suppose to. When an opportunity presented itself to have a speech program evaluate him and see if he needed therapy, we hopped on it.
From what the therapist told me after the evaluation, he will start in a mommy and me class in September and then enroll into a child care program after he turns 3. I have been in denial about getting him help. I listened to my doctor and figured his speech was delayed and would eventually correct itself as he got older. But now Jake is growing bigger and becoming more frustrated when he cannot communicate with us. He is not where he should be speech wise. He can only say a handful of words when he should have over 75.
I hope this program works for him and we start seeing more words and phrases from him. It will also be beneficial for him to be around kids his age and learning to follow rules.
It's hard when you see your child struggle. I hope this new program will help Jake with his communication and interaction! Hang in there, mama!
